About This Lesson

This children's book helps PreK–2 students and families talk about immigration, community, and what it means to stand with neighbors. In The Town of Many Colors, a boy named Ben watches the colors of his vibrant town fade as friends and neighbors begin to disappear. With his mother's guidance, he finds language for what is happening -- and discovers how to keep his community's spirit alive.

Created by Together We Rise -- a national grassroots campaign housed at We Are All America and powered by more than 100 organizations -- this picture book is a bridge-building read-aloud for classrooms and families navigating hard conversations. It builds social-emotional vocabulary, fosters empathy, and opens discussion about belonging and community care. Ideal for circle time, family literacy nights, or lessons on human rights and immigrant heritage.
